Stem Cell Therapy for Osteoarthritis of the Knee

Stem cell therapy for osteoarthritis of the knee is a non-surgical treatment option for patients suffering from chronic knee pain from osteoarthritis.  At Florida Center for Regenerative Medicine we have found that adult stem cells and platelet rich plasma harvested directly from the patient is an effective tool for treating the debilitating effects of knee arthritis.  Since the knee receives very little blood flow, many of the natural healing elements of the body fail to reach the parts of the knee affected by the disease.   Read further to learn more about OA of the knee and how we can help your body harness its own powerful healing elements.

Knee Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis of the knee is a degenerative joint condition that typically becomes symptomatic after age 40. It is the most common source of pain and disability in the knee joint.   Knee osteoarthritis is both painful and degenerative to the extent that it often negatively affects the quality of life for patients who suffer from the condition.  Although many patients suffering from OA of the knee are urged to pursue a surgical option for treating knee osteoarthritis, we prefer an approach that uses the healing power of the body aided by modern technology to treat the condition.  Continue reading and discover how stem cell therapy and platelet rich plasma offer an alternative to knee surgery for osteoarthritis.  Contact us today and discover if stem cell therapy for knee osteoarthritis is a treatment option for your Knee OA pain.

Statistics

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in two people is expected to develop osteoarthritis of the knee by age 85. Additionally, about two of three people who are obese develop osteoarthritis of the knee.

Causes

Primary knee osteoarthritis generally is the result of wear and tear of cartilage in the knee due to repetitive use, leading to inflammation. The articular cartilage of the knee is the protein substance that acts as a cushion between the bones at the knee. As this cartilage degenerates the friction of daily movement causes damage to the surrounding bone and tissue resulting in pain.  The severity of the degeneration is affected by age, heredity and extensiveness of wear and tear over time.

Secondary osteoarthritis of the knee is caused by an external factor, such as disease, obesity or injury.

Symptoms

  • Joint pain, often at the end of the day.
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling
  • Warmth or fever
  • Creaking of the knee joint
  • A progressive condition, osteoarthritis of the knee can lead to an outward curvature of the knee.

Diagnosis

The most common way to confirm osteoporosis of the knee is to X-ray it. An X-ray will show loss of cartilage in the joint and narrowing of the space between the joint bones.

Traditional treatments for Osteoarthritis of the Knee

  • The first line of treatment usually is a non-steroidal over-the-counter or prescription pain medication.
  • Some people are able to get their symptoms under control with the use of steroids.
  • For obese people, one of the most immediately effective treatments is weight reduction.
  • Some people may benefit from physical and/or occupational therapy.
  • Some individuals may benefit from the use of support devices, such as braces, canes or walkers.
  • Arthroscopic surgery, using a tiny camera to see into and repair the knee.
  • Total knee replacement surgery

Stem Cell therapy for Knee Osteoarthritis as an Alternative to Surgery

Stem cell therapy for knee osteoarthritis offers an effective alternative to knee surgery for many knee-related injuries and disorders, including osteoarthritis. Rather than masking the symptoms, stem cell therapy treats the underlying cause by allowing the damaged knee to regenerate cartilage.  Stem cell are the repairman of the human body and are particularly effective in treating joint diseases where low blood flow hampers the natural healing process of the body.  We perform stem cell treatments on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia.  The procedure provides a viable alternative to painful and risky total knee surgery which is a common treatment for knee osteoarthritis.  Click the links for more information on the natural healing power of stem cell therapy and platelet rich plasma.  Contact us now and discover whether we can treat your knee osteoarthritis with stem cell therapy.
